O.C. sheriff’s deputies kill man swinging a hammer in Laguna Niguel
Orange County sheriff’s deputies responding to reports of a disturbance Monday shot and killed a man swinging a hammer at an apartment complex, authorities said.
Deputies responding around midday found a shattered glass door at Coral Sea at the Seaside in Laguna Niguel, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
“Shortly after they arrived, they encountered a male subject who is believed to have been armed with a hammer. That’s when the officer-involved shooting took place,” said sheriff’s Lt. Matt McDaniel.
Witnesses told KCBS-TV Channel 2 that they heard deputies yelling at the man to put the hammer down. Then they heard between three and five shots.
The man, said to be in his 30s, died at the scene, according to McDaniel. His name was not released.
The initial disturbance was between a man and a woman, KCBS reported.
