Woman Killed, Son Hurt in Crash at Rush Hour on 101 in Ventura
A 44-year-old Ventura woman was killed and her 14-year-old son seriously injured Thursday when their van drove off the northbound Ventura Freeway and crashed into a pole just north of Main Street in Ventura during afternoon rush hour.
A passing motorist alerted the California Highway Patrol to the accident about 5:30 p.m.
The red van was engulfed in flames by the time officers arrived.
The teenager was transported by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center. Authorities did not immediately reveal the names of the victims.
CHP officers closed two lanes of the freeway for about 90 minutes as they responded to the accident, which snarled traffic along the freeway for several miles.
