Ventura resident Harold William Woodling died Wednesday at a local hospital after a brief illness. He was 85.

Woodling was born June 11, 1913, in Girard, Kan.

After high school, he performed in vaudeville acts throughout the Midwest and California and had some bit parts in movies.

He served as a Navy corpsman during World War II and later worked for a dairy farm in Whittier.

He retired in 1981 from his job as a supervisor for Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, also known as 3M, in Los Angeles and moved to Ventura to be near his son and grandchildren.

He was involved in Masonic Lodge No. 633 in Ventura, Scottish Rite and the Ventura Shriners.

Woodling’s family remembers him as a dedicated father and grandfather whose special companion was his dog, Bud. The two were rarely seen apart, the family said.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Frances Woodling, and a son, Kenneth Woodling.

Woodling is survived by his son, Dr. Bruce Woodling; two stepsons, Jon Balden and Greg Balden; and four granddaughters.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to New Horizons Outreach in Ventura to benefit abused, neglected and abandoned children.

Donations can also be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children or a local charity.

A Masonic memorial service will be held at Ted Mayr Funeral Home on Monday.
