Mayor John Gullixson has withdrawn support for 3rd District Supervisor Todd Spitzer’s reelection campaign, citing their differences on the proposed commercial airport at El Toro. In early April, Spitzer indicated that he supported a petition drive for the ballot initiative, which, if passed, would require a two-thirds vote of the public to build or expand airports, jails or hazardous waste landfills, among other land uses. Dubbed the Safe and Healthy Communities Initiative, supporters must garner the signatures of 71,000 registered voters for it to appear on the March 2000 ballot.
Gullixson, who is against the initiative, has asked Spitzer to remove his name as an endorsement on Spitzer’s campaign materials, and to reconsider his position on the petition drive.
