Last year, pedestrian accidents claimed the lives of 14 children in the city of Los Angeles.

Locally, a nonprofit organization called Safe Moves is training 400,000 elementary and middle-school students each year on the fundamentals of bicycle, pedestrian, rail, vehicle occupant and recreational safety.

Safe Moves offers school workshops, parent classes and traffic safety rodeos that teach children to recognize traffic hazards.

For $6 plus tax, the organization sells a bicycle helmet that meets all safety standards and retails for $29.95. Helmets are sold through the Safe Moves office at 15500 Erwin St., Suite 1121, Van Nuys, and are adjusted to properly fit the rider.

Started in 1986, the organization is funded by the city Department of Transportation, the state Office of Traffic Safety and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
