Guns at School
* You might be shocked to learn who’s bringing weapons into our local high schools. Gangsters? Delinquents? Think again. It’s the adults.
Since Oct. 19, armed police officers have been patrolling the campuses of Ventura High School and Buena High School. This is how the school board has decided to make our students safer.
I don’t feel my daughter is safer. As the father of a Ventura High senior, I don’t recall a time in the last 3 1/2 years when I felt she was more in danger.
Gun accidents and incidents happen where there are guns! Human beings (this includes police officers), influenced at times by tension and emotion, make mistakes. One only has to look at how many questionable police shootings occur in Southern California to illustrate that.
So what’s next? Gun accidents and incidents at our high schools?
At some point, violence in public schools becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. We’ll look back someday and wonder: Where did our kids learn such violence?
