Assessors
* I was disappointed and angry at comments about assessors made by Dean Andal, chairman of the State Board of Equalization, in a letter published in The Times.
I do not believe the electorate appreciates such negative campaigning. Mr. Andal is contributing nothing positive to the duties that the board and assessors must accomplish together. His comments refute the impression assessors have been given that we are respected and that he understands the legal and professional role we play in administering the property tax system.
He talks about abuses by assessors yet time after time we in the California Assessors Assn. have asked him to document these abuses and he has failed to do so. This is because there are no abuses, merely legitimate differences of opinion between assessees and assessors.
We as an association, and I as its president, have tried to reach out to Mr. Andal and other board members to reach common ground on issues about which we disagree. These kinds of insensitive remarks take us back to square one.
