SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO
It may take a few years for the city to reopen a 200-foot stretch of Camino Capistrano that was damaged last winter when heavy rains eroded slopes in the northern area of the city. Officials closed the road in January to protect motorists and prevent further damage.
According to officials in the Engineering and Building Department, it may be two to three years before the road can be reopened because of the work the Orange County Transportation Authority is doing to fix the nearby rail lines. The city has applied to the Federal Highway Administration for federal funds to fix the damage; repairs are estimated to cost about $1 million.
