L.A.’s Bid for Convention
* Upon reading “L.A.’s Bid for Democratic Convention Is in Trouble” (Dec. 21), I was surprised the writers did not note that DNC official Steve Grossman is from Massachusetts and DNC official Roy Romer is a former governor of Colorado. Boston and Denver are L.A.’s chief rivals for the 2000 Democratic National Convention.
I am familiar with all three cities. I grew up in Denver in the same neighborhood as Mayor Wellington Webb. I also lived in Boston, where Mayor Thomas Menino was one of my former students. I have lived in L.A. for the past 10 years. Thus, I am familiar with the political and business games played in each city and am of the opinion that Grossman and Romer are playing games with L.A.’s bid as they try to position their respective capital cities to win the bid.

* Once again the Democrats are showing their true colors. They just can’t accept the largest pool of money being offered to them, to hold the 2000 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. It seems that it is private money, not money out of city coffers, as is being offered by Denver and Boston. The Democrats just cannot figure out how to pull their hands out of the taxpayers’ pocket.
