Peace Program
* Congratulations for news about children being taught the advantages of peaceful cooperation (“Salinas Schools Teach Their City the Path of Peace,” Dec. 5).
Society can help this along by less emphasis on money as a measure of success. We tend not only to honor actors more than the inventors of vaccines, but also to fasten derogatory labels on decency. For instance, a man who sees little virtue in meanness and vice is a “nice guy” or a “square.”
One “nice guy” who managed to achieve success was George Washington. He made it from Virginia to New York under arches of flowers.
