NEWPORT BEACH
A shortage of bus drivers in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District has reached the critical stage, according to district officials. Of 53 bus driver positions, six are vacant, and the transportation department also has lost all three of its trainers and a dispatcher since September.
District officials said they are looking at long-term solutions to avoid another shortage.
Because of the vacancies and drivers who are ill or out on long-term disability, the district’s six bus mechanics fill in for absent drivers on a regular basis.
