HUNTINGTON BEACH
Veteran Councilman Peter M. Green is the new mayor. Green, a 72-year-old professor of biology and ecology at Golden West College, took the gavel from council member Shirley S. Dettloff this week. City Council members rotate the post on a seniority basis each year.
Green was first elected to the council in 1984 and reelected in 1988, holding the mayor’s seat in 1991. He then sat out for four years, as required by the city’s term-limit law, but was reelected in 1994 and again this year.
He said he felt the impulse to continue running because so many projects he was working on were incomplete. “But I’m beginning to believe nothing is ever completed,” he joked.
The only change he wants to make to meetings would be to spend less time on public comments and other informal events and focus more energy on issues requiring votes.
