Easter Seal officials are hoping to attract more disabled elderly people to their senior day care program, operating at 304 W. Elm St. The center is geared toward seniors 60 and older who have some type of physical disability or memory impairment, such as Alzheimer’s disease.
“This program is specifically designed for people who can’t be left alone,” said Michele Johnsen, the group’s director of communications. “A lot of these people would otherwise have to be placed in homes.”
The center, which offers seniors a chance to exercise, listen to music, eat lunch and occasionally interact with children and pets, has attracted only 14 seniors so far. The group wants to bring in up to 40, Johnsen said. The elderly can be dropped off on weekdays as early as 7:30 a.m. and picked up no later than 5 p.m. The service costs $35 a day, but scholarships may be available, Johnsen said.
