School Board to Fill Vacancy by Calling Special Election
A vacancy on the politically fractious Centinela Valley Union High School District Board of Education will be filled by a special election rather than by appointment, Los Angeles County elections officials have confirmed.
Candidates must file nomination papers by 5 p.m. Friday at the county registrar-recorder offices at 12400 Imperial Highway, Room 2013, in Norwalk.
The election will be Nov. 3 to fill the Area 3 position left vacant by the death of board member Mike Escalante. The term expires Dec. 3, 1999.
Board members in June appointed Mali D. Currington, a member of the district’s Personnel Commission, to the vacant post, but a residents group collected enough signatures to require that an election be held, thus invalidating the appointment.
The high school district includes the cities of Hawthorne and Lawndale.
