New Study Ordered on Mining Plan

Plans to nearly double the size of a Moorpark gravel pit will get further study after dozens of neighbors aired their fears of increased pollution and traffic to a Ventura County planning panel.

The county Environmental Report Review Committee voted 5 to 0 recently to ask planning staff for a more in-depth study of Transit Mixed Concrete Co.’s request to expand, after hearing complaints at a public hearing.

Transit Mixed wants to extend its 50-year operating permit, expanding its sand and gravel mining operation on Happy Camp Road and adding hundreds of truck trips a day through Moorpark’s downtown.

County planning staff will enlarge chapters of the environmental impact report that deal with noise, sedimentation and alternatives that the company might offer to expanding its mining operation, said Rich Guske, a land development engineer for the county Public Works Agency.

The staff then will call for another public hearing to review the revised environmental study, he said.
