THE GOVERNOR’S RACE

* What Happened Wednesday: Democrat Kathleen Brown held news conferences in San Francisco and Los Angeles to announce a proposed overhaul of California’s environmental regulations to streamline government and encourage economic development. That goal can be achieved without sacrificing the effectiveness of regulatory programs, she said. Republican Gov. Pete Wilson went on a tour of agricultural facilities in Salinas, Yuba City and the Fresno area.

* What’s Ahead: Brown scheduled an appearances in the Los Angeles area for today. Wilson was scheduled to campaign with U.S. Senate Minority Leader Bob Dole (R-Kan.) in San Francisco today and attend a fund-raising event in Orange County tonight.

THE SENATE RACE

* What Happened Wednesday: Republican Rep. Mike Huffington went to San Diego to meet with the San Diego Border Control Task Force to discuss Proposition 187 and efforts to keep immigrants from entering the United States illegally, and then held a news conference in Los Angeles to receive an endorsement from the National Taxpayers Union. Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein met with law enforcement officials and received their endorsement during a trip to Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and the Monterey Bay area.

* What’s Ahead: Feinstein planned to be in San Francisco this morning for a demonstration of an emergency water system for use in disasters. Development of the system was authorized when Feinstein was San Francisco mayor, her campaign said. Sen. Dole was scheduled to speak tonight at a fund-raising dinner for Huffington in Beverly Hills.
