HUNTINGTON BEACH : City to Spray Trees to Eradicate Insect
A prolific insect that lives in Indian laurel trees, also known as laurel figs, has sparked numerous complaints to the city’s Public Works Department.
Cuban laurel thrips, which are tiny and black with a shiny surface, do not seriously harm trees but do cause leaves to curl where the bugs incubate.
Their numbers have been increasing in Southern California. The bug migrated from Cuba to the United States in 1955 and arrived in Orange County in 1962.
The city will spray trees to control the insect. Spraying will be done on an on-call basis only. Residents can call (714) 536-5480 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to schedule a spraying appointment.
