Students to Attend Hot Rod Job Fair

Students from several San Fernando Valley high schools are scheduled to attend the Sixth Annual National Hot Rod Assn. Career Opportunities Fair on Oct. 26 at the Pomona Raceway.

The event, which is expected to draw more than 3,300 high school students and instructors from across Southern California, will provide professional counseling on careers in such fields as marketing sales, media public relations and technical automotive repair service.

A High School Challenge event is also scheduled, in which student teams will compete against each other and the clock in performing various automotive service skills. At stake are $10,000 in scholarships courtesy of the association, the Automobile Club of Southern California and the Southern California Gas Co.

There also will be other prizes, including a slightly damaged 1994 Oldsmobile for the winning school’s automotive department.

In addition, video production teams from selected high schools will compete in capturing the fair’s events on film, with plaques of recognition given to the winners.

An exhibit of vintage model emergency and tow vehicles; a drag-racing exhibition, by the Nevada Highway Patrol’s “SuperCop” fleet of souped-up squad cars, and a professional pit crew’s dismantling and reassembling of a 5,000-horsepower engine within minutes will round out the afternoon.
