College Fees Are Unfair

The cost per unit for a class taken at our local community college will now be $50, or on average $150 per class, if you have a bachelor’s degree. This is a tragic and unfair situation.

The purpose of a community college system has always been to make higher or continuing education available to all segments of the local population without barriers to entry. The opportunity to explore new fields and expand one’s mind was part of the community college’s mission.

This was one of California’s greatest assets, equal educational opportunity for anyone who desired it. This helped to make California more competitive in areas which required higher education and encouraged individuals to become culturally more aware.

Why is the distinction made between those who have bachelor’s degrees and those who do not? Having a bachelor’s degree is no guarantee of even an average income. Why not also charge this tuition rate to those who have an associate’s degree, or to those individuals who have no intention of getting a degree?
