SAN DIEGO : Man Killed While Checking on Car
A man was shot and killed outside his Scripps Ranch apartment Tuesday night while checking to see if his car was being burglarized, a San Diego police spokeswoman said.
Joseph William Bonno IV, 24, was found shot once in the chest in his apartment parking lot at Scripps Ranch Boulevard near Mira Mesa Boulevard about 10:30 p.m., authorities said.
Police said Bonno, who lived in the apartment with his pregnant wife and 4-year-old child, was taking the trash out and made a detour to check on his car.
Witnesses told police several cars had been burglarized recently. They reported seeing a distinctively designed car before and after Bonno’s shooting.
Police found a car matching that descriptions at Mira Mesa High School Wednesday morning, Lt. Barbara Harrison said. Of the two men and two boys in the car, none of them students at Mira Mesa, one threw a package of 9-millimeter bullets from the car as police pulled it over, Harrison said.
The four occupants of the car were being questioned by police Wednesday evening, Harrison said.
