Pomona Gas Station Gets OK to Sell Alcohol

The City Council agreed to permit beer and wine sales at an Arco gas station and convenience store that will be built at Towne Avenue and Arrow Highway but urged the developer to buy and demolish a neighboring liquor store.

The developer, Fred Cordova of Cordova Chase Co., said that he has negotiated a price for the liquor store property with a hamburger chain that owns the land but that it may take time to oust the store owners.

The Planning Commission had refused to grant a conditional-use permit for beer and wine sales at the station because of the neighboring liquor store. Cordova said that his company could not afford to buy the store until the Arco project was approved and that Arco would not go forward without permission to sell beer and wine.

The council voted 6 to 1 Monday night to override the Planning Commission on the strength of Cordova’s promise to buy and close the liquor store. Councilman Boyd Bredenkamp opposed the idea, saying he cannot support the sale of beer and wine in gas stations.
