President-Elect Bill Clinton
Bush’s loss is an interesting reminder that going all the way back to Franklin D. Roosevelt (who was elected four times), only two Presidents--Eisenhower and Reagan--have managed to sustain a second term. We’ve had an assassination (Kennedy), a forced retirement (Nixon) and a President who was never elected to the highest office (Ford). Truman chose not to run for a second term, Johnson was forced by public dissent not to run again and Carter (like Ford and Bush) was defeated. Talk about term limits!
