President-Elect Bill Clinton
Here are the chronological 1991-92 events that tore this Reagan/Bush Democrat away from the Republicans:
Bush surprised by Orange County Republicans’ message that the economy is in poor condition; the proliferation of Americans begging on freeway off-ramps; the Republican convention gives as much time to Pat Robert/Pat Buchanan as it gives to Bush/Quayle; the Republican platform contains a section against abortion for any reason, including rape and incest; Bush campaigns for “family values” and ignores legitimate questions about his domestic economic leadership during the last four years; Bush hits Clinton hard on his avoidance of the draft during the Vietnam War, even though millions of men in my age group, including his vice president, did the same.
The final nail for me in Bush’s political coffin--listening to the “advice” of Orange County demagogue Rep. Robert Dornan that Bush should question the patriotism of a 23-year-old Clinton going to Moscow on a European student tour.
