Ferraro Endorses Abrams for Senate
NEW YORK — With only three days until the election, Geraldine A. Ferraro buried the hatchet Saturday and endorsed Robert Abrams in his race for a Senate seat.
Fellow Democrats praised Ferraro, saying her action could give Abrams the Italian-American vote he needs to defeat GOP incumbent Sen. Alfonse M. D’Amato.
Abrams, who narrowly defeated Ferraro in a rough-and-tumble primary, announced the endorsement at a campaign rally Ferraro didn’t attend.
Ferraro had withheld her support because of hard feelings over the primary, during which she felt her Italian heritage was assailed.
“The tone of the recent primary raised issues of ethnic stereotyping that I intend to pursue after Nov. 3,” Ferraro said. “Bob Abrams has agreed to join me in that effort.”
