F-18 Pays Final Salute to Philippines Base
Associated Press
CUBI POINT NAVAL AIR STATION, Philippines — A lone F-18 Hornet fighter flew over Cubi Point Friday in a final salute as the U.S. Navy closed what had been its largest overseas naval air station.
About 100 people turned out for the low-key ceremony marking the formal closing of the 36-year-old Cubi Point Naval Air Station, part of the Subic Bay naval complex 50 miles west of Manila.
Adm. Thomas Mercer, the senior U.S. officer in the Philippines, presented plaques and memorabilia to Richard Gordon, mayor of the adjacent city of Olongapo.
