UNION LABEL: It may be Labor Day, but Orange County isn’t very fond of unions: Only one in seven workers (14%) belongs to one. . . . That’s not as low as some Southern cities though, such as Atlanta (11%), and Jackson, Miss. (8%), according to Newport Beach’s BTA Economic Research Institute. But it’s way below places like New York (33%) and Chicago (23%). . . . And Allen J. Scott, a UCLA geographer who’s studied Orange County, says the figure is not likely to grow here: “The prospects for unionizing a largely immigrant work force in manufacturing aren’t very good.”
