Driver Dies in Plunge Off San Pedro Bridge
A 26-year-old Los Angeles man died Sunday when his truck tractor plunged over the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro and smashed into the roadway more than 100 feet below, the California Highway Patrol said.
The driver, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, was heading east on the bridge at 2 p.m. when he came upon traffic that had stopped to avoid a disabled car being assisted by a CHP unit, said CHP Officer Susan Billat. The driver of the tractor swerved and crashed into the guardrail.
The tractor took out 250 feet of guardrail before plunging over the bridge. The bridge was closed for more than two hours. All lanes were not reopened until 7:05 p.m.
