The Muscular Dystrophy Assn., for the first time in five years, is host of a live Labor Day telethon serving Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

The local show will be broadcast from Ventura Toyota between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. today and will be carried live on KADY Channel 63. Although not on the same scale as the national MDA Telethon, which is taking place over the weekend in Las Vegas with host Jerry Lewis, the local show will feature performances by several entertainers.

Musicians Third Planet will perform from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sky King will play from 2 to 4 p.m. Radio stations KTRO and Q-105 will have live remotes at the telethon site and will give away prizes.

Harpo the Clown will entertain children, and stylists from several local salons will give haircuts for $10 each and donate the proceeds. An auction at 1:20 p.m. will feature a number of items, including dinners for two at Ventura County restaurants and free passes to Disneyland.

The Ventura Lions Club will barbecue, and hot dogs, root beer floats and other food will be available at the show.

All of the money raised will go to the MDA’s free patient clinic, medical research and public health education programs in Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, officials said.
