Firm Fined for Campaign Gift Laundering
The state Fair Political Practices Commission on Thursday fined Sunrider Corp. of Torrance $22,000 for laundering 11 campaign contributions to two candidates in 1990.
Sunrider, which manufactures and sells various health and beauty care products, was ordered to pay the fine after the company tried to exceed the state’s $1,000 contribution limits by having six other people contribute a total of $5,000 to state treasurer candidate Angela (Bay) Buchanan and then reimbursing them, the commission said.
In addition, on Sept. 25, 1990, five Sunrider distributors made contributions of $3,500 to state controller candidate Matt Fong. All five contributions also were reimbursed by Sunrider.
The company disclosed all 11 reimbursements on its major donor campaign statement filed Jan. 31, 1991, commission officials said.
