Gardner’s Retirement

Your April 21 article concerning the deferred compensation for retiring University of California President David P. Gardner omitted important facts that were stated clearly at the April 20 meeting of the UC Board of Regents.

1. The regents’ action to establish a Dec. 31, 1992, vesting date for Gardner’s deferred compensation and supplemental retirement benefits did not give him new or additional benefits. Rather, this action prevented the forfeiture of amounts which Gardner had worked to earn over the last nine years and which would have been forfeited due to the combined circumstances of changes in the tax laws and his early retirement due to the unexpected and tragic death of his wife.

2. The total compensation of UC’s president, even with these deferred compensation arrangements, still only ranks at about the 75th percentile of top administrator compensation at leading universities.

3. The paid administrative leave granted Gardner from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31, is commonplace and was in lieu of Gardner receiving the over one year of sabbatical leave that he has accrued.
