Allen Says No Tax to Rebuild L.A.
In response to your recent article, “O.C. Legislators Resist Tax Hike to Rebuild L.A.” (May 6), I want to make sure my position on a proposed quarter-cent sales tax increase is absolutely clear: I oppose it.
I’m willing to consider any reasonable option for rebuilding Los Angeles--provided it does not increase taxes. We can’t afford to raise taxes for new buildings, only to see them burned down again. That’s why I’m encouraged that Peter Ueberroth is heading a special commission formed to rebuild the city and find long-term answers. Time and again, Mr. Ueberroth has shown an ability to forge private-sector solutions to complex challenges--without new taxes or government intervention.
More than anything, that’s what we need now: fresh ideas for dealing with terribly difficult problems that haven’t been solved simply with more money.
DORIS ALLEN, Assemblywoman, 71st District
