Walnut : Church Design Panel Set
St. Lorenzo Catholic Church scored a minor victory last week as the City Council agreed to appoint a council member to a committee to oversee design of a new church building.
The panel, which will include members of the Planning Commission, city staff and church representatives, will review design proposals for the new facility on the northeast corner of Lemon Avenue and Meadowpass Road.
The church is proposing an unusual contemporary design, but some residents are asking for a more conventional building.
Father Dennis Vellucci, head of the 4,000-member parish, had urged the council to appoint two of its members to the committee. Without substantial direction from the council, the project could drift aimlessly for several months, Vellucci said.
The 3-2 vote Wednesday appointed Councilman William Choctaw to the panel.
Mayor Thomas Sykes and Councilman Ray Watson dissented, saying they favored naming two council members.
