KING CASE AFTERMATH: READERS RESPOND : What’s Wrong With Safety?
We want to blame peaceful middle-class Americans because they move out of the inner cities to the quiet, peaceful suburbs. We refuse to allow gangs and drug dealers to roam and terrorize our neighborhoods.
Do we really think it’s wrong to try and keep our kids safe and protected? When did Americans decide it was all right to have drug dealers fighting over territories and gangs ruling neighborhoods? Why is it wrong for us to choose not to live in an area where the residents don’t obey the laws?
How can we expect race relations to improve when we preach differences? African-Americans, Japanese-Americans, Korean-Americans, Latinos, Asian-Americans, Anglos--aren’t we all Americans? We separate ourselves because we have inherent differences. We separate ourselves by economics, ethnic, religious and political differences. We are never going to all be the same, but we can all be honest, responsible, self-respecting citizens.
