KING CASE AFTERMATH: READERS RESPOND : ‘White Flight’ Wasn’t Wrong
Ventura County residents have been accused of “white flight” that resulted in the economic situation of Los Angeles. I am an ex-Angeleno, having selected Los Angeles as my home in the early ‘50s. I loved my city and had no reason to leave it until I found the things I valued were no longer there.
When my friends and I left Los Angeles, we certainly didn’t do it for racial reasons. Isn’t it odd that in 1980 I moved to a city in Ventura County (Santa Paula) that is approximately 60% Hispanic?
Finally, I am tired of being expected to apologize for being a white, middle-class American citizen who lives where I want to live in a house paid for by hard work and self-denial. For this, I will apologize to no one.
Hold your heads high, Ventura County and particularly the jurors of the Simi Valley trial. Any shame would have come only if you had given in to political and racial pressures. You performed as American citizens upholding our Constitution. Can the looters and burners of Los Angeles say the same?
