Ford to Retool 3 Plants: Ford Motor Co. said it will spend $650 million to retool three assembly plants for a redesigned pickup truck, temporarily laying off 2,800 workers. The No. 2 auto maker said its Edison, N.J., and Twin Cities assembly plants in St. Paul, Minn., will be down from June 12 until mid-September. Skilled trades and salaried workers will keep working. The Louisville, Ky., truck plant, which employs 3,700, will keep operating during the changeover because Ford makes its popular Explorer sport utility vehicle there. The hourly workers laid off from the New Jersey and Minnesota plants will receive up to 95% of their regular take-home pay under Ford’s union contract.
