Community Policing
THE PROGRAM: The Los Angeles Police Department has assigned 31 officers to full-time community relations duty in the San Fernando Valley. The officers, who in the past spent only a few hours a month on such duty, now work full-time with neighborhood organizations and individuals. One of the 31 areas is described below:
Van Nuys
THE OFFICER: Chuck Leber
Van Nuys Division
(818) 989-8343
THE AREA: Stolen vehicles and thefts from vehicles are the main problems on Leber’s beat. Residential and commercial burglaries and street robberies are common as well. Many complaints concern day laborers who cause traffic to slow when they hail work from sidewalks along Kester Avenue, he says. Prostitution and narcotics sales are major problems along Sepulveda Boulevard, he adds.
