* George Straszer; Began Times Suburban Sections
George Michael Straszer, 87, who started the suburban sections of the Los Angeles Times in 1956. Educated in journalism at the universities of Montana and Washington, Straszer was a Times editor for 26 years. He created and for several years edited what were known at the time as the newspaper’s “zone sections.” The regional sections for local news have been widely copied by newspapers across the country. Straszer retired in 1968 as an assistant to then-Editor-in-Chief Nick Williams Sr. On Saturday in Moraga, Calif., after a long illness.
