From Times Staff and Wire Reports
New Roof-Crush Standard for Trucks, Vans: Light trucks and vans sold after Sept. 1, 1993, will be required to meet roof-crush standards to protect occupants in rollover crashes, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said. The standards will be similar to those required for passenger cars. Under the new regulation, the roof of a vehicle will be subjected to a force 1 1/2 times the vehicle’s weight. The vehicle will pass the test if its roof dents less than five inches.
