ANAHEIM : Card Player Slain by Robbers Is Identified

A 25-year-old man killed when three robbers burst into an Anaheim apartment Saturday evening was identified Sunday as Francisco Millan Penaloza of Anaheim.

Penaloza suffered a gunshot wound to his upper body, police said. He was treated by paramedics at the scene and transported to Anaheim Memorial Hospital, where he died.

The slaying occurred about 9:15 p.m. in the 1100 block of North Mayfair Avenue, where Penaloza and group of others were playing cards, police said.

During the middle of a game there was a knock on the front door, witnesses told police. When the door was opened, three men, described as being in their late 20s and brandishing handguns, charged through and ordered the card players to get on the floor.

Witnesses told authorities that three of the card players got down but that Penaloza apparently hesitated and one of the gunmen shot him. The three robbers then ran out of the apartment, firing more shots behind them as they escaped, police said. That is apparently when another card player was hit in the arm by a bullet, police said. The unidentified victim was taken to Martin Luther Hospital in Anaheim and later released, police said.
