SANTA PAULA : 2 More Campuses Designated Magnets
Santa Paula moved one step closer to having an all-magnet elementary school district last week when the school board agreed to designate two more schools as magnets.
The decision at the Santa Paula Elementary School District’s board meeting will add McKevett as a visual and performing arts magnet in September and Thille as a language arts magnet in the 1992-93 school year. Magnet schools offer special academic programs that attract students from outside normal attendance boundaries.
Bedell, Webster and Glen City elementary schools already have magnet programs, bringing the anticipated number of magnets to five out of the six elementary schools in the district.
Bonnie Bruington, the district’s assistant superintendent of educational services, said the magnet schools are being used as part of a voluntary desegregation program.
District officials said they hope Blanchard Elementary School will become a magnet school by 1994, creating an all-magnet school system.
