Sixty-six people died on California roads during the four-day Thanksgiving holiday, and at least half of the victims were not wearing seat belts, the California Highway Patrol reported. Of the 41 deaths investigated by the CHP, 32 were people who were not wearing seat belts, said CHP spokesman Steve Kohler. Twenty-five traffic deaths were reported by other law enforcement agencies, but they do not record seat belt data, Kohler said. The 66 traffic deaths from 6 p.m. Wednesday to midnight Sunday was up from 62 killed last year. However, arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol were down, Kohler said. There were 2,028 drunk driving arrests statewide during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
