A controversial proposal at UC Berkeley to require an undergraduate course dealing with minorities in America was kept alive by the school’s Academic Senate, although the faculty body overwhelmingly decided to send the plan back to a committee for revision. In an unusual show of interest, more than 150 students attended the meeting. Supporters say the so-called American Cultures course is needed because about half of Berkeley’s undergraduates come from nonwhite ethnic minority groups. However, opponents claim the original proposal was ill-conceived and snubbed the contributions of white ethnic groups. A compromise plan is expected in the spring.
