City crews were working Sunday night to repair a broken sewer main in the 8400 block of Onalaska Street that sent raw sewage flowing into a storm drain and caused the closing of Dog Beach just north of Ocean Beach.

Recent rains apparently triggered the break, which was discovered about noon Sunday, according to Pat Hoy, hazardous materials management specialist for San Diego County. The sewage was flowing at a rate of 500 gallons per minute, Hoy said.

The storm drain empties into the San Diego River, which could carry the sewage to Dog Beach, Hoy said. The beach will be closed for at least several days while the water is tested to determine whether it is safe for swimming, Hoy said.
