Local News in Brief : Anaheim : 3 Children Rescued Off Balcony in Home Blaze
Three children were rescued by firefighters Sunday from the second-story balcony of an Anaheim Hills house after fleeing a fire, an Anaheim Fire Department spokesman said.
Gaurav Sharma, 13, and his sister Payal, 10, were baby-sitting a 2 1/2-year-old girl when an electric heater ignited drapes downstairs in the home on South Fairway Lane, Fire Department Capt. Jim Groober said.
The children telephoned 911 about 5:52 p.m., then fled upstairs and took refuge on the house’s outdoor balcony, Groober said. Firefighters found the downstairs doors locked and used a ladder to the balcony to remove the children and enter the house.
Fire damage was limited to the drapes, Groober said, with smoke damage throughout.
“The fire was not that big a deal,” he said. “The drapes did not spread the fire very much. . . . It was like they were fire retardant or something.”
The children’s father was contacted at work, and the mother of the 2 1/2-year-old showed up to pick up the toddler, Groober said.
