Local News in Brief : 2 Teen-Agers Die in Flaming Crash
Two Canyon Country teen-agers died in a fiery crash on a mountain road near Newhall on Saturday night after the driver lost control of the speeding car and slammed into a power pole.
Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigators said the car was traveling about 85 m.p.h. along Sierra Highway near San Fernando Road about 11:30 p.m. when the driver lost control and hit a curb. The car spun around and slammed into a power pole, apparently knocking loose a power line that ignited the car’s gas tank and engulfed the vehicle in flames, authorities said.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Howard Fairchild said investigators believe the victims are two 17-year-old Canyon Country boys, but the bodies were so badly burned that their identities had not been confirmed by the coroner’s office Sunday.
Fairchild said the driver probably was killed instantly and that the passenger probably burned to death.
