Local News in Brief : Drag Race Ends in High-Speed Crash
A car involved in a Saturday night drag race down Parthenia Street in Northridge missed the finish line and crashed through a fence, injuring the driver and his two passengers.
Driver Jose Sanchez Delgado, 27, of Canoga Park, was in stable condition Sunday at Northridge Hospital Medical Center after the 10:40 p.m. accident. Delgado was pinned behind the steering wheel until freed by firefighters, authorities said.
His two passengers, George Sanchez, 22, and Alfonzo Gonzalez, 18, both of Canoga Park, suffered minor injuries and were treated and released.
Witnesses told police that Delgado was racing with another driver at about 70 m.p.h. when he lost control and swerved into a fence at Parthenia Street and Shoshone Avenue, said Sgt. Dennis Zine of Valley Traffic Division.
Zine said Delgado is believed to have been driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. A blood sample was taken at the hospital.
Occupants of the other car fled and have not been located.
