Local News in Brief : Epple Regains Lead in Assembly Race
Democrat Robert D. Epple has regained his lead over incumbent Wayne Grisham in the see-saw race for the state Assembly’s 63rd District seat.
Epple, a lawyer and member of the Cerritos College Board of Trustees, was leading the Norwalk Republican by 184 votes--48,455 to 48,271, a spokeswoman for the registrar-recorder’s office said Thursday.
The day after the Nov. 8 election, Epple was ahead by 87 votes, but more than 100,000 absentee, write-in and other uncounted ballots from throughout Los Angeles County remained to be tallied.
On Monday, after 73,000 of those ballots were counted, Grisham held a nine-vote lead. Epple regained the lead after 56,000 more ballots were counted Thursday. About 2,500 ballots remain to be counted, but election officials did not know how many of those were from the southeast Los Angeles County district, spokeswoman Marcia Ventura said.
Election officials expect to complete the count by Tuesday.
