National Election Returns : State-by-State Election Reports of Key Races and Issues : Texas
AUSTIN — In a battle of favorite sons, Republican George Bush and running mate Dan Quayle captured Texas’ big prize of 29 electoral votes, beating the Democratic ticket of Michael S. Dukakis and Sen. Lloyd Bentsen.
But Bentsen easily won reelection to the Senate, winning 57% of the vote in early returns.
Bentsen had campaigned hard for both offices, taking advantage of a law passed to enable Lyndon B. Johnson to run simultaneously for vice president and the Senate in 1960. He had promised to resign his Senate seat if the Dukakis-Bentsen ticket won, as Johnson did after John F. Kennedy won the presidency.
Early returns in House races gave Democrats 10 seats and Republicans 4.
