NATIONAL ELECTION RETURNS : State-by-State Election Reports of Key Races and Issues : Massachusetts
BOSTON — Favorite son Michael S. Dukakis easily carried his home state and won its 13 electoral votes.
Early returns gave Dukakis, governor for 10 of the last 14 years, 59% of the vote to George Bush’s 41%. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy coasted to his sixth term with 68% of the vote. Ten liberal Democrats, including Joseph P. Kennedy II, won House seats, as did Silvio O. Conte, the delegation’s only Republican.
Massachusetts voters were also deciding whether to ban nuclear power in the state, mandate “humane treatment” of farm animals and repeal a legislative pay raise and a low requiring union wages on public construction projects.
