NATIONAL ELECTION RETURNS : State-by-State Election Reports of Key Races and Issues : Delaware
DOVER — Vice President George Bush won Delaware’s three electoral votes, completing a Republican sweep that returned Gov. Michael N. Castle and Sen. William V. Roth Jr. to office.
With 62% of the precincts reporting, Bush had 88,255 votes, or 58%, while Democrat Michael S. Dukakis had 64,981 votes, or 42%.
With 71% of the precincts in, Castle had 71% of the vote for a landslide over Democrat Jacob Kreshtool.
Roth had 89,394 votes, or 64%, to defeat Democratic Lt. Gov. S. B. Woo, the nation’s highest-ranking elected official of Chinese descent, who had 50,857 votes, or 36%.
The one bright spot for Democrats appeared to be the race for the state’s lone congressional seat, where Rep. Thomas R. Carper captured 66% of the vote in breezing to his fourth term, defeating Republican challenger James P. Krapf. Carper received 89,975 votes to 45,408 for Krapf.
